Lot description

Folio: engr. title and 54 maps, all but 5 hand-coloured (1 missing left side of the map, 4 maps split in 2, most maps starting to split at the lower edge with some almost completely split, few maps with rather large tears in lower part, some maps browned, some edges frayed, occ. spotting).

Contemp. vellum, flat spine (sl. soiled, tail mising, front hinge partly broken, pastedowns mostly missing, corners bumped).

Interesting collection of 54 seventeenth-c. maps, almost all by the renowned Dutch cartographer De Wit: the world map "Nova Orbis tabula", set in an elaborate border, followed by 4 continental maps in "carte-à-figures"-style and 21 regional maps, of which 15 on European countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, France, Low Countries, British Isles and Scandinavia), and 6 on Russia, Asia and the Holy Land. Most of the maps have large, elaborate cartouches and some maps have inset views and plans. Bound at the end is a composed copy of "Nieut Kaert-boeck, van de XVII Nederlandse Provincie": an engr. title, 7 text ff. and 9 maps from an early ed. (following Koeman Wit 22A) and 14 (of 16) maps from a later ed. (following Koeman Wit 25). Completed with 5 maps by other cartographers: "Dominio Veneto [...]" by J. Blaeu, "Neapolitanum regnum" by J. Janssonius, "Marchionatus Romani Imperii" by C. J. Visscher, "Tabula Germaniae [...]" by N.-J. Visscher, "Hessas [...]" by H. Allard. Detailed list on request.
Ref. Koeman Wit 22A & 25.
