Lot description
Obl. 4to: engr. title-24 pp.; 22 (of 23) maps (map "Belgium sive Inferior Germania" missing, maps bound random, some min. soiling in the margins (stronger towards the end), some bl. edges restored).
Mod. black shagreen, blind-stamped title on front board, flat spine (sm. defect to head, corner sl. bumped).
Later ed. (1st 1616) by Hendrick Doncker of this very rare atlas of the 17 Provinces by the prolific Flemish engraver Abraham Goos. Employed by both the Hondius and Blaeu family, this small atlas ("Caertboeck") was the only one Goos published himself. It contains 22 delicately engraved oval maps in a decorative rectangular frame: 1 general map of the Low Countries and 21 maps of the individual regions. Our copy has an unrecorded preliminary: "Beschryving van de Seventien Provintien" (Koeman doesn’t mention any text, nor is it the text from an earlier ed.).
Ref. Koeman II Don1. - STCN.
Prov. Franciscus Philippus Antonius Vande Vijver (preserved old ms. entry on pastedown).
