4to; 45 pl. (text n.c., foxing, very occ. on plates, sl. marg. damp stains, some pl. browned).
Contemp. half red shagreen, buckram on boards, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, a.e.g. (boards much faded, joints and spine very rubbed, tail missing).
First edition published posthumously by Forbin's son-in-law Comte de Marcellus (1795-1861), diplomat and author of the text. Illustrated with the portrait of Forbin and 44 lithographic plates, some on tinted background, depicting mainly views in the Near East after drawings made by Forbin during his travels. Auguste de Forbin (1777-1841), painter and antiquary, was i.a. the successor of Vivant Denon as curator of the Musée du Louvre.
