Lot description
Diam. 15 cm, red wire with ms. note "Calotte portée par Sa Sainteté Léon XIII en Mai 1903" and wax seal.
Traditional hat, also known as a solideo or pileolus, worn by Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903). The encyclical "Rerum novarum" earned him the nickname the Social Pope. A seminar at the university of Leuven was founded at his request by Cardinal Mercier.
