Lot description

2 parts in one vol., 4to: [22]-1/93-[10]-95/269-[19], [22 incl. engr. title]-496-[71] pp.; 21 pl. (some quires sl. browned and browning, occ. soiling or sl. staining, contemp. ms. entry hidden with paper on title, occ. foxing, marg. damp stains in pt. II, larger at end, wormtrack or wormholes to some lower margins in pt. II, ms. entry crossed out on last f.).

Contemp. marbled sheep, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (sl. traces of use, head, tail and joints skillfully restored, wormholes to spine).

Very rare edition (1st 1644 under title "De profanis et sacris veteribus ritibus", Rome, A. Fei) of a work dealing with the rites of ancient Egyptians (and also symbols and hieroglyphs) and pagan Romans in 1st part, illustrated with 30 woodcuts in-text (one red heightened on p. 67) and 16 copper-engr. plates (10 fold.), and in 2nd part with Christians rites and sacraments, illustrated with 7 in-text and 5 plates (2 fold.). The 2 parts have a separate title, the first one with copper-engr. mark of printer Andrea Fei and date 1644, the second with copper-engr. title. With some woodcuts in-text representing the symbol of Pax or a tower. Another Fei's mark on last leaf. By the erudite and antiquarian Casali (1578-1648), Papal Chamberlain at the hospice of S. Trinità dei Pellegrini in Rome, who owned a large collection of Antique objects in his palace.
