Lot description
4to: [12]-215-[1] ff. (sl. marg. damp stain and some margins strengthened in prelim.).
Contemp. blind-stamped calf, boards decorated with roll-stamps and fillets, spine ruled with fillets with raised bands, ink-titled fore-edge (very rubbed, lack of leather to spine).
Second edition, published a year after Simon de Colines' ed. in Paris. Work divided into 3 books, in which the author defends, against Luther, the obligatory force of the Church's commandments, the Mass and monastic vows. This is the most famous work by Clichthovius (+ Chartres 1543), a former student of the "Collège du Lys" in Leuven, a learned theologian and eminent controversialist who was the first in Paris to refute Luther. Last leaf with on verso the wood-engr. coats of arms of the archbishop-elector of Cologne Hermann and those of the city of Cologne.
