3rd ed. of this transl. (1st Spanish 1590, 1st French 1598) by Robert Regnault. Spanish Jesuit missionary and naturalist José d'Acosta (c. 1539-1600) was sent to the West Indies and appointed second provincial in Peru. For ten years, he worked ardently for the conversion of the Indians. In this renowned work he gives a complete description of the customs, laws, ceremonies, etc., of the indigenous peoples, and provides very valuable information on the fauna and flora of these regions.
