Contemp. half green sheep, green cloth covers with blind roll border, gilt-orn. flat spine (rubbed).
First edition of the work by the Belgian P.-J. Benoit (1782-1854) who travelled in Suriname in 1830. There, he witnessed daily life and opposed the abolition of slavery. The ill., bound at the end, incl. 1 front. and 49 nice lithographs "sur chine appliqué" by Madou and Lauters (fig. 99 subjects), most showing scenes of the everyday life of enslaved people, but also topographic views, life of the native Indians and Afro-Americans, the fauna and flora, ceremonies, houses, costumes, etc. and a slave market. Enriched with a colour lith. by J. Gould & W. Hart fig. birds (flyleaf).
