Gustave Fontaine (1877-1952) was a Belgian sculptor and visual artist born in Etterbeek. After briefly considering a military career, Fontaine took classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and continued his training at the Brussels Academy, with the sculptor Julien Dillens. From 1919 to 1925 he lived and worked in Paris. Later on he went on study trips to Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. In 1918 with 14 fellow painters he founded the "Cercle des Quinze" with the intention of organizing an annual exhibition. After the war, Fontaine creates several war monuments, incl. the stone statue "La résistance à l'occupant allemand" along the bridge "Pont des Arches" in Liège. The photographic archive presented here shows studio, exhibition and outdoor views, documents his works and gives us an adequate insight in the work of the Brussels artist.
