Large plan of the strategically important French port city Calais ("clavis Galliae" or key to France). Heavily contested throughout the centuries, the inscription mentions the city came under power of the Spanish king Philip in 1597, referring to the brief Spanish occupation during the Franco-Spanish War. 2nd state, from the 5th part of the German "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (text on verso, leaf 22).
