Lot description

1 p., 26 x 20,5 cm, brown ink on laid paper, signed "Carolus", countersigned "Urries secret[ario]", address and seal under paper on verso, laid on Bristol (browning, some marg. holes and worm tracks, seal partly missing, tears without loss on folds).

The Emperor (1500-1558), King of Spain as Charles I, orders his lieutenant and captain general "Don Diego de Mendoça" to resolve the disorders and lack of obedience of his subjects in order to ensure the good and preservation of his city and kingdom [of Valencia ("se deve proveher en remediar el desorden y poca obediencia desse pueblo por lo q. cumple al bien y conservacion dessa ciudad y reyno"). Mendoza (1469-1536) was a Castillan officer, veteran of the Italian wars, appointed Count of Melito in 1506. In 1520, he was appointed viceroy of Valencia, where he had to fight against the rebel "Germanies" (artisan guilds) and the populace that supported them. Countersigned by Don Hugo Urries, secretary of Charles V.
