Lot description
Drawing, pen, brown ink and watercolour, laid paper, on 2 sheets, together 47,2 x 67,8 cm (some sm. spots, joint split at lower edge, very sm. tears in black margin).
Nicely drawn plan of the fortifications of Ghent, incl. the newly erected Montereyfort, whose construction started in 1671 as a southern defence against the French troops of Louis XIV (a paper flap with changes to the plan is pasted over this part). Large decorative cartouche with a legend to 12 main locations in Spanish (o.a. "Puerta de Bruselas", also known as the Keizerpoort, "Puerta de Courtray ", etc.). A large putto holding the coat of arms of Francisco Antonio de Agurto (1640-1702), governor of the Habsburg Netherlands between 1685 and 1692. Possibly a copy of the manuscript map from the atlas "Plantas de las prinsipales villas qve sv Magd. catolica tiene en los paises bajos con sus forrificationes como estan en este año 1688" by Snavels, dedicated to F. A. de Agurto.
