Lot description
101 hand-coloured etchings, c. 20,7 x 27,7 cm, laid paper with watermark (Gothic P with flower), dated 1566-1580, German text, numb., 4 French tables of contents (tables of contents folded, cut and restored at top, some prints trimmed on platemark, few water stains, few sm. tears on edges).
Good impressions, mostly with margins. Mounted on guards. Early 18th-c. polished calf, gilt-orn. covers and spine with raised bands and title label, gilt-orn sides and turn-ins, red edges (sl. rubbed, sm. defects on spine).
Carefully hand-coloured collection with 101 double-page "Geschichtsblätter" by Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) with views, battles, executions, etc. from the Dutch Revolt. Our copy incl. 4 series from 1566 to 1580, each with a French table of contents. The 1st series (n. 1-20) incl. Protestant sermons outside Antwerp, the Iconoclasm, the Siege of Valenciennes, the arrival of the Duke of Alba in Brussels, the execution of the Counts of Egmont and Hoorn, etc. The 2nd series (n. 1-27, additional n. 25 not in table of contents, n. 25-27 changed by hand to n. 26-28) incl. the Sieges of Briel, Rotterdam, Alkmaar, the looting of Mechelen, executions in Haarlem, naval battles, etc. The 3rd series (n. 1-10, 12-17, 19-20, additional n. 16, few n. changed by hand and few discrepancies with table of contents) incl. a bird's-eye view, city hall and several episodes in Antwerp, the looting of Maastricht, the Sieges of Aalst and Ghent, etc. The 4th series (n. 1-16, 18-21, 23-37, no table of contents of n. 30-37) incl. entries of William of Orange and others in Brussels and Antwerp, the Sieges of Amsterdam, Maastricht, Kortrijk, Mechelen, Diest, battles near Namur, Aarschot, etc.
