Abundant wood-engr. ill. in and outside the text and 2 folding maps. Garnier proposed an exploration trip to the Indo-Chinese lands but being only a lieutenant, the expedition was led by Doudart de Lagrée with Garnier as second in command. Leaving Saigon in 1866, they visited Cambodia and the temples of Angkor, the forests of Laos, southern China and Yunan. Responsible for work on astronomy, meteorology, hydrography, etc., Garnier discovered the main navigation route between Cochinchina and China and ensured the return of the expedition to Shanghai, Doudart having died at Tong-Tchouen.
