Lot description
Obl. folio; 51 pl. (min. marg. soiling on pl. 36 and 45, some outer edges soiled).
Loose in publ. portfolio (sl. rubbed, joints worn, corners sl. bumped).
Curious collection of 51 photogravures (1 unnumbered, the others 1-50) of the largest island of Indonesia that is fully within its territory, showing mostly its industry (tobacco and coffee), but also the nature and infrastructure (transport by road, river and train), monuments and indigenous people. All signed "C. Kleingrothe, Medan Deli 1898", with the address of J.B. Obernetter in Munich; legends in German, Dutch and English. Charles J. Kleingrothe (1864-1942) was a German phographer who spent considerable time in the Dutch East Indies; his photographs are known for their excellent representation of Indonesian colonial life.
