Mod. vellum, flat spine with red leather title label. Very good copy.
Rare first Dutch edition (1st Plantin Press 1617) of a treatise on (the origins of) writing, alphabets, writing tools, etc. by the Flemish Jesuit H. Hugo (1588-1629), one of the first works on the subject. Ed. enl. with annotations and preface by C.H. Trotz (1703-1773). At the end, a short chapter "De inventione typographiae". Engr. ill.: 3 full-page and 2 folding pl. 1 sm. woodcut ill. of a "stylus" (p. 67). Title in red and black.
