Lot description

3 vol., folio: [10]-569-[1], [2]-370-[1], [2]-386-[2] pp.; 67 pl. (pl. of Grimbergen Abbey and Basilica of Scherpenheuvel cut rather short, sm. tear in fold. of Villers Abbey, marg. wormtrack in first part of vol. 3, occ. spotting).

Contemp. sheep, gilt-orn. spines with raised bands, red spr. edges (front joint of vol. 1 and 3 partly split, boards and spines sl. rubbed, some corners bumped).

Second ed. of this topographical work, profusely illustrated with large views of abbeys and monasteries. This ed. is particularly interesting from a topographical viewpoint because of some renovations to the buildings since the 1st ed. (1656-1666), the new pl. are oriented differently as well. Engr. ill.: 1 front.-portrait of Sanderus by F. van Bleyswyck, headpiece with portrait and coat of arms of the dedicatee Marie-Elisabeth by F. Bleysweyck, 3 title-vign. by D. Coster, 5 full-page pl. depicting i.a. Our Lady of Montaigu and Archduke Leopold William kneeling before the Virgin of Alsemberg, 61 double-page pl. showing abbeys, monasteries, convents, incl. Affligem, Brussels, Antwerp, Mechelen, Leuven, Averbode, Grimbergen, Tongerlo, Villers, etc., numerous in-text ill. depicting coats of arms of monasteries and their abbots or saints. Title in red & black.
Ref. BB V:64-68:S-216. - STCN.
Prov. Guillaume Antoine Joseph de Bezerra, canon at the Cathedral of Our Lady (Antwerp) and "censor librorum", who inherited the library of Guilielmus Philippus de Herzelles (1684-1744), former abbot of the St Gertrude's Abbey in Leuven and 13th bishop of Antwerp. Curiously, the view of the abbey in this work is dedicated to the abbot in function at the time of reissue which was de Herzelles and thus contains the arms of the aristocratic family de Herzelles. As this work is mentioned in the inventory of the library of de Herzelles and has the bookplate of de Bezerra, this copy likely belonged to de Herzelles. Ref. Claude Sorgeloos - "Praesim ut prosim: les livres de Guillaume-Philippe de Herzelles [...]", in De Gulden Passer, 80 (2002). (arm. bookpl. engr. by Pieter Balthazar Bouttats with ms. annot.).
