Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., 4to: engr. title-[2]-xiv-323, [6]-211-20 pp.; 49 pl. (portrait loose, some very min. spotting and browning, some edges sl. frayed, list with subscribers of the 1st part bound partly at its proper place in the 1st part and partly misbound at the begin. of the 2nd part).

Contemp. half calf, sp. paper on covers, spine with raised bands (corners rubbed and bumped, scratches on covers, joints and bands sl. rubbed).

Fourth edition (1st 1676) of this intriguing travel account of Schouten (1638-1704) who describes in a colourful and humorous manner his experiences and vicissitudes as well as the customs and religions of the local populations, general demographic aspects, such as the sea battle between the Dutch and the English of Bergen. Schouten was in service of the Dutch East India Company as a surgeon and had the opportunity to travel widely, and visited not only islands in the Indonesian archipelago, but also India and Ceylon. He designed during his stay drawings that later would serve as illustrations for this work. Our copy comprises an engr. title, an author's portrait, 47 engravings on 44 fold. plates by a.o. C. Decker showing views of cities, local inhabitants, religious ceremonies, etc. and 3 fold. maps of Ambon, Ceylon and Java and one world map.
