Lot description

12mo: [12]-215 [= 251]-[1 bl.] pp. (minor marg. dampstaining).

Contemp. vellum, flat spine (warping, few spots). Good copy.

Leiden ed. of the famous Pancharis (1587) of the Clermont poet Bonnefons (1554-1614), one of the best imitations of Janus Secundus’ Basia. These fine erotic verses are followed by a poem on the city of Dijon, the Tumultus Gallicus and a collection of occasional poems; with in addition the "Imitations and Gaytés amoureuses", as well as the French translation of Pancharis by the Auvergnat poet Gilles Durant seigneur de la Bergerie (also 1554-1614). "Aucun poète du XVIe siècle n’a mieux peint, ce qu’on peut appeler le triste bonheur, la tristesse qui naît du plaisir, la mélancolique habitude des âmes tendres d’associer l’idée de la mort à l’idée de la volupté apaisée" (Gay). Nice engr. front. (Venus & Amor). According to Willems this ed. was printed by Fr. Hackius and sold by N. Hercules.
