Cont. gold-tooled embossed calf over wood, edges bevelled inside, covers with ornamental frames with triangular corner pcs (showing an ape) and central coat-of-arms, (7 of 8) metal bosses and corner pieces, metal catches, gilt flat spine, a.e.g., (heavily wormed, joints splitting, clasps gone). Sold as a binding w.a.f.
Monumental commentary on part of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa by the Louvain theologian G. Mercerus (1572-1639). The (battered) dedication copy, with the gilt arms of Josephus Geldolphus van Ryckel (Oirbeek, Tienen 1581 - Louvain 1642), abbot of St Gertrudis (Louvain), and owner of a large library. Ref.
