Lot description

2 vol., sm. folio: [14]-560 ff. (fore-edge f. 558 cut off, sm. wormtracks and (damp-)stains), [16]-544 ff. (t.-p. lower margin cut short, some worming and dampstaining).

Different bindings: old blindstamped and -ruled calf over wood (vol. 2 with binder's initials I.B.), rebacked, mod. endpapers (vol. 1), fore-edge tabs (vol. 2). Acceptable copy.

Rather rare collection of works by the Carthusian Dionysius van Leeuwen (Rijkel 1402-1471), one of the most productive theologians of the 15th century. Engr. title: title-border with Christ, the Virgin and saints kneeling in front of the enthroned God at top, the ecstasy of Dionysius Carthusianus witnessed by the Pope, the clergy, the emperor and the worldly princes at bottom, the evangelists and Latin church fathers writing in their studies at left and right. 2nd vol. including a full page woodcut by Anton von Woensam (f. 544v, stained and wormed). 1st volume is rubricated in red and includes woodcut initials and ms. marg. notes throughout.
