Lot description

39 drawings, pencil, black ink, 8,5 x 5,2 to 24,1 x 18,3 cm, laid, wove, tracing paper, 28 signed, 19 dated, 12 titled (some sl. foxed, few light spots, some edges sl. browned unevenly, 2 with sm. marg. tears).

Hinged at edges.

Ulysse Auquier (1897-1987) was a Belgian artist mainly known for his sculptures. When World War I broke out, he fled to England and worked in an industrial design office until his mobilization as a soldier in a pilot company for the Battle of Flanders. Incl. 26 portraits of soldiers, officers, a woman, civilians such as Collard, Duez, Vandenbrook, etc., 4 copies after drawings made at the Belgian front in Eikhoeck in May 1917 such as "La chambre des Ours", "Le capitaine Bordeau à la mitrailleurse", etc., 9 indoor and outdoor views made after WWI in London.
Joined: 3 autograph signed letters (May 1918: Ulysse to his brother Roger about Miss Please and some memories with his brother; March 1919 : Ulysse's father to Ulysse's brother Roger about the news of Arthur's death; June 1939: Ulysse to his daughter Irène about future activities and her cousin Arthur), 2 drawing reproductions, additionnal documents concerning his biography, the price lists of his works in the gallery Baron René Steens, photocopies of his diary with sketches, etc.
