Lot description

3 vol., folio: [32 incl. front.]-571, 678, [2]-752-[61] pp. (occ. spotting, clear marg. damp stain in some quires throughout vol. 3).

Contemp. mottled sheep, gilt-orn. spines (joints sl. rubbed, back joint of vol. 1 starting to split, some corners bumped).

Later, corrected ed. of this important emblematical encyclopaedia of biblical and classical iconography. The author quotes Cezar Ripa, Zaratino Kastellini, Pier Valerianus and Horus Apollo as his sources. Ill. with nice allegorical engraved front., engr. vign. on general title, engr. dedication to W. Vlaardingerwoud and 172 (126, 46) emblematic in-text ill. by F. Ottens and J.C. Philips. Hubert K. Poot (1689-1733), a farmer's son from Abtswoude, was not only a tobacco merchant in Delft, but also the author of poems and text editor for R. Boitet. Title in red and black. Subscriber's list in preface (only c. 200 subscribers, i.a. some "groot papiere exemplaren").
