Lot description

Sm. 4to: front.-[16]-277-[1] pp. (sl. age-toned, staining, foxing, marg. womtracks, marg. damp stains, sm. hole in right margin p. 169).

Contemp. calf, spine with raised bands (sl. rubbed, spine renewed, corners bumped, head missing, two tissue guards newly bound in to protect the front.).

First edition of a work on the Seraglio, first work of Tavernier, based on his visits to Constantinople made during his 1st and 6th voyages. Illustrated with a front. and a woodcut ill. (Turkish text) on p. 73. The gem merchant and traveler Tavernier (1605-1689) traveled many times in Asia (Turkey, Persia, Japan...), bringing back detailed information about the countries he visited and also precious stones. He is best known for the discovery of the 118-ct blue diamond in 1668 which was sold to Louis XIV. His work "Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier ", 1676) was published at the behest of the King.
