Lot description

Copper engr., 39 x 51 cm, nicely col. (printer's crease).

Framed under passe-partout in a wooden frame (not unframed). Good copy.

One of the first and most attractive maps of America (1st ed. in 1635). Oriented to the west, this map covers the American coast from Virginia to New England and Quebec. It is cartographically derived from data accumulated by Adriaen Bock and other Dutch fur traders active in the early 17th c. This attractive map includes scenes of Indian natives paddling their canoes and is adorned with deer, foxes, bears, Indian villages and homes and with some European vessels. From a Dutch edition. "The map survived through the remaining publishing history of the Blaeu house (...) this map is not known to have been reissued" (Burden 241). Ref. Van der Krogt, 9310:2. - Burden 241.
