Lot description

8vo: [80 (incl. front.)]-336-[11]-[5 bl.] pp. (word "Colberto" erased on title and restored with a pen, occ. sm. stains, marg. water stains on some ff., annot. on title and verso of front.).

19th-c. quarter-sheep, marbled paper on boards, gilt-ruled flat spine, red spr. edges (sl. faded spine).

First printing of the famous engravings by C. Merian after Holbein in the margins of an early Basel ed. of Erasmus "Praise of Folly", and reprinted many times after the present ed. Engr. ill.: front., mark on typogr. title, head piece with arms of J.B. Colbert, the dedicatee, 4 full-page pl. incl. dedication and 3 portraits (Erasmus, J. and H. Holbein), and 81 sm. ill. in text (some folded), printed or pasted on. Preface by Charles Patin. Some 18th- and 19th-c. notes incl. one long note in latin on flyleaf in front of front.
