Lot description
4 pp. 8vo; letterhead of the Grand Hôtel d'Europe in St Petersburg (min. tear on the fold and in a margin).
This Stradivarius, called the Hercules, which he acquired after making his fortune in the USA in 1895, was stolen from him during a concert in Saint Petersburg in December 1907.
A remarkable letter expressing this loss with emotion but also with philosophy: "la perte d'un instrument quelque précieux qu'il soit, ne saurait égaler la perte d'un être aimé... [...]".
Prov. Gustave Huberti (1843-1910), Belgian composer linked to the Flemish school despite his Walloon roots.
