Lot description

4to, ± 26 x 16,5 cm on sight, 1 p., black ink on tinted paper, s. "G. Rossini" (2 sm. light scratches, sm. white stain in the lower margin).

Under mod. passe-partout, gilt wooden frame and glass (not studied outside frame, sl. foxing on passe-partout).

Score of 4 staves for harmonium, excerpt from the "Ritournelle pour le Sanctus" of the "Petite Messe solennelle". It was one of the last works by Rossini (1792-1868), composed at the request of the banker Alexis Pillet-Will. Written for four soloists, mixed choir, two pianos and harmonium, it was first performed on 14 March 1864, under the direction of Jules Cohen, in a private concert at the home of the patron, before being performed in public a year later. Nice autogr. dedication "a mon jeune ami et collegue Jules Cohen", signed and dated. J. Cohen (1830-1901) was a French composer, friend of Saint-Saëns, "maître de chapelle" to the Emperor during the Second Empire, then Professor at the Conservatoire and conductor of the Paris Opera chorus.
Prov. Galerie Signatures, 32 rue Drouot 75009 Paris. With certificate of authenticity.
