Lot description

8vo: [2]-77-[2] ff.

Contemp. overl. vellum, flat spine (end- and flyleaves renewed).

Second edition (1st 1597) of this collection of Latin poems, epigrams (on the elephant, the cock, the Nothing...) and epitaphs by the French poet Passerat (1534-1602). Since 1570, this author composed every year, and this for 27 years, a poem that he dedicated to his protector Henri de Mesmes (1532-1596), said "Monsieur de Roissy", who had made Passerat his son's tutor. Mesmes, stateman disgraced in 1596, was a great bibliophile and friend of Montaigne.
