Lot description

1. Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) and Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833-1904) - Kumanki kage [Shadows Everywhere or Shadows without Shade]. Baigai, 1867 (?). 48 double pp.: 7 pp. text, 3 pp. with front. and single colour ill. p., 82 pp. with silhouttes, 25,1 x 16,8 cm, prints and pages and colours in very good condition, silhouette in hanging roll on frontispiece page (p. 9) cut out and coloured in grey on back paper, wrappers and title cartouche with stains, four-hole binding loose. Silhouettes of members of a poetry society by Zeshin with "poetry strips" and images by Yoshiiku Utagawa. "In 1867, Zeshin helped to launch a book of shadow portraits or silhouettes by designing a frontispiece. "Shadows Everywhere", consists of a series of the silhouettes (not thought to have been drawn by Zeshin). Zeshin introduces a portrait, mounted as a kakemono, into the elegant room he has pictured, with a balcony overlooking a lake." (Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, pp. 964 & 915-16). Ref.
