Lot description
Terracotta with dark red patina, 37,3 x 26,5 x 16,5 cm, signed "P. PEPERS." (some sm. losses).
Good condition.
Bust portrait with the van Zuylen coat of arms. Pieter Pepers (1730-1785) was a sculptor from Bruges who is still very present in the city today with sculptures of the Madonna next to Our Lady's Church, St John Nepomucene on the bridge with the same name and St Paul next to St Salvator's Cathedral. This suggests the sitter is from the Bruges branch of van Zuylen van Nyevelt, from which many family members were active as post master and politician. The sitter is wearing bands, indicating he was either a lawyer or a clergyman.
Joined: J. Gailliard, Maison de Zuylen. Histoire & généographie, Bruges, E. Gailliard, 1863. (2 pcs)
