Lot description

4to: [8]-219-[21] pp. (some light browning).

18th-c. sheep, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, speckled edges (head and tail missing, front joint split, corners bumped, sides rubbed).

Treatise on cardinal virtues and church leadership by Bernard of Clairvaux (c. 1090-1153), abbot and mystic, dedicated to his former disciple pope Eugene III. Large woodcut on title. Title in red and black.

Prov. Gifted in 1594 to Cardinal Giovanni Evangelista Pallotta (1548-1620), archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, by Gerardus Vossius Borghlonius (= Geeraard Vuskens, Borgloon c. 1547-1609 Liège), Latinist and Hellenist scholar and clergyman who spent considerable time in Rome (ms. entry on title). - Mod. collector's label.
