Lot description

Visiting card, 10,6 x 6,3 cm, ms. legends on verso, imprint "W.S. Soule, Fort Sill, Indian Territory. Photographs of Indian Celebrities, Stereoscopic Views, Etc." on verso.

W.S. Soule (1836-1908) was a photographer of the American West. As from 1869 Soule became the post photographer at Fort Sill, a United States Army post north of Oklahoma. The fort was first built during the Indian Wars and played a significant role in every major American conflict since 1869. Soule had to document the construction of the fort, but is primarily known for his stunning portraits of Native Americans. This visiting card portrays a woman of the Comanche tribe, a Native American tribe from the Southern Plains of the present-day United States. On verso: "Femme de la tribe des Commanche rouge comme des briques de figure".
