Contemp. three-quarter green shagreen, blind-orn. green cloth on covers gilt-ruled, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands (rubbed, sm. def., spine sl. faded).
First issue of this impressive work with title (with 20 small medallion portraits) and 20 fine lithogr. on "chine appliqué" by Madou on the life of famous painters of the Flemish and Dutch schools i.a. Van Eyck, Memling, Quinten Matsys, Rubens, Rembrandt, Teniers, Steen, Van Dyck, Potter, Dow, etc. Each pl. is followed by an explanatory text written by the "elite" of the Belgian literary and scientific world of that time a.o. de Stassart, Lesbroussart, Polain, etc. Steel engr. head- and tailpieces.
