Lot description
Folio: engr. title-xxvii-[1]-244 pp.; 80 pl. (engr. title loose & sl. ink-stained, quire G loosening; some min. spotting or staining).
Contemp. marbled calf, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (corners bumped, head & tail def., some soiling). Good copy.
Second and most important ed. (1st 1701), enlarged by 2 chapters, of the earliest treatise on lathe and ornamental wood and ivory turning. By the Minim friar Ch. Plumier (1646-1704), traveller and royal botanist, but also math, mechanics and painting enthusiast. Printed in 2 columns with juxtalinear texts in French and Latin ("en faveur des étrangers"). Ill. with engr. title and 80 full-page pl. (numb. 1-80) showing turning tools and finished products. Engr. mark on title and 2 engr. headpieces showing putti doing some woodturning.
