Lot description

Large folio: [8]-xii-86-v-viii pp.; 118 (of 119) + 1 extra engr. pl. on laid paper (spotted, pp. i to iv of the subscribers' list and pl. 32 Granvelle, vue du côté du jardin, are not present).

Mod. three quarter black leather, mottled paper covers, spine with raised bands (paper rubbed and used).

First French ed. of P.-J. Goetghebuer's architectural work dedicated to William I, with a selection of buildings, castles and mansions illustrating the 19th-c. architectural activity in the Low Countries (Bruges, Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam, etc.). The line engr. plates have shaded areas aquatinted and incl. 2 double numbered folding pl. showing the castles of Seneffe and Soestdijk. The plates are incorrectly numbered in the text with no pl. 101, making the total number of pl. 119 (not 120) for a complete edition. In this copy only pl. 32 (Hôtel Granvelle, vue du côté du jardin) is not present, but it has the suppl. pl. on Waterloo, which is interesting because of Goetghebuer's recording of the Battle of Waterloo that attracted attention throughout Europe. With the prospectus bound in.
Ref. Vanderhaegen 8810. - Van der Marck p. 251.
Prov. Paul Saintenoy, architect, Brussels (bookpl.).
