Contemp. half calf, mottled paper covers, gilt-orn. spines with raised bands, red edges (covers - those of vol. I sl. stronger - and edges sl. rubbed, damp stain to front cover of vol. II).

First French edition by Jean-Nicolas Demeunier of the third voyage executed under the direction of Cook, Clerke and Gore on the Resolution and Discovery from 1776 until 1780. Cook explored Kerguelen Islands, Hawaii, Vancouver, Alaska, Aleutian Islands and the Bering Strait where he was blocked by sea ice. He returned exploring Hawaii but the relations deteriorated with inhabitants who ended up killing Cook (his death is narrated at end of vol. III). Clerke and then Gore brought back the ships via the South of China and captain James King finished the account of the voyage based on logbooks (only vol. I & II are written by Cook). Complete with the 88 plates, mostly fold., representing the death of Cook (front. of vol. I), 28 maps or plans incl. a general map of all Cook's voyages, portraits of inhabitants, habitations, ceremonies, human sacrifices, everyday life scenes, canoës, etc. These plates were drawn by John Webber (1751-1793) during the expedition and transformed later into copper engravings. With the often missing "Table de comparaison des termes numériques, dans l'idiôme de toutes les isles de la Mer Orientale [...]".
