Third French edition (1st French ed.: 1610; 1st publ. as here: 1619), with commentary of B. Paludanus, of this famous sailing manual for Indiamen (princeps in Dutch: 1595-1596). The publication of the navigational data of Linschoten (1563-1611) was a crucial element in breaking the 16th-century monopoly enjoyed by the Portuguese in the East-Indian trade and the subsequent successes of the Dutch East-India Company. The pts II and III are the second French edition and contain, besides sailing directions, descriptions of the Cape Route as well as navigating instructions for the Indian Ocean and the South Chinese Sea, the routes for South-America and the Caribbean, the Strait of Magellan, Linschoten's account of Florida and many other places in North and South America. On his return, he passed by the Portuguese supply depot at St. Helena Island in May 1589, hence the two plates of the island. Illustrated with 2 identical engr. titles, Linschoten's portrait, the double hemisphere world map by Plancius engr. by Jan van Doetecum (Shirley 187; sm. hole in centrefold, marg. tear with loss, horizontal line sl. browned in the middle of the map and one vertical smaller), 5 maps engraved by Arnold and Hendrik van Langren, 36 plates by Joannes and Baptista van Doetecum, but drawn by van Linschoten himself, concerning local habits, local nobility, regional dress and navigation and a title-vignette on title of pt. III showing a ship with 4 medallion views of Antwerpen, Amsterdam, Middelburg and Enchuysen.
