Contemp half calf, gilt flat spines, red leather title labels (sl. rubbed, corners bumped, sm. def. at heads & tails). Good copy.
Very rare first Dutch edition (1st French 1769) of this description of the Dutch colony of Suriname, by the Maastricht physician Ph. Fermin (1720-1790), who lived in the colony 1754-1762. Engr. ill.: large folding map showing the colony and hundreds of plantations along the rivers (with their names or owner's names listed in a register in the text) and 3 folding plates showing i.a. a "tent-boot", a water-powered and a horse-powered sugar mill. Dedicated to the "Lords administrators of the colony of Suriname", this book is one of the few and most important early sources on the colony of Suriname. With advertisement at the end of vol. II.
