Contemp. quarter calf signed "Schultes rel[ieur] du roy", gold- and blind-tooled spines with wide raised bands, marbled edges (sl. rubbed, spines discol.). Good copy.
New ed. (1st 1788) of the fictional travel journal of the Scythian sage Anacharsis (4th c. BCE). Considered as "Appealing to every class by reason of its charming narratives and vivid pictures", it had a profound impact on the development of French neo-classicism and the growth of philhellenism. Ill. with 7 engr. front. Complete with the atlas (P., Ledoux, 1824) with 44 pl. engr. by A. Tardieu, of which 16 maps (12 with hand-col. borders) showing Greece and its islands, the Greek colonies in North Africa, the Black Sea, the Cyclades, Thessaly, etc., 13 plans showing battles, The Bosphorus, the environs of Athens, Phocis and Dorida, Sparta, Olympia, etc., and 15 views showing Plato and his disciples at Cape Sounion, temples i.a. the Parthenon & Delphi, coins and costumes, etc. Binding by François-Bernard Schultes (1792-1846), originally from Cologne, active in Brussels (Rue de Ruysbroek) from the 1830s onwards, bookbinder to the King and the court at the end of his career.
