Lot description

1841-1861

23 drawings & 2 hand-coloured lithographs. Various techniques, mostly pencil and watercolour. Each one mounted on loose 4to-size ff., a few drawn directly on 4to-size paper. Various formats and sorts of papers. Mostly signed, a few dated.

Each f. neatly slipped into plastic pocket. Shagreen folder. Nice ensemble.

Charming collection of small drawings depicting mostly romantic subjects such as interior scenes, portraits, animals, animated landscapes, historical or oriental scenes, costumes, etc. Some artists: Paul Lauters (a dog), François Stroobant (heightened lithography signed 1845), Jules Victor Génisson (interior of Tournai cathedral), Gustave Simonau (a fisherwoman), Willem Roelofs (landscape), Jean-Jacques Bekkers (oriental scene), Van Camp. Other signatures: "Schmitz", "Seghers", "P. Bauwens", "J. Deraedt", "PL". A few signatures unidentified. One f. signed by Teresa and Maria Milanollo, the famous Italian violin-playing child prodigies who toured Europe in the 1840s. In 1841-1842, Teresa (1827-1904) studied in Brussels, with the Belgian composer and violinist de Bériot. During that time, the sisters played in Antwerp, Liège and Brussels until April 1842. The signatures of Teresa and Maria are dated 25 February 1842, when they were just 14 and 9 years old. Maria (1832-1848) died 6 years later in Paris, of tuberculosis.
