Old gold-tooled mottled calf, decorative gilt border on covers, gilt spine with morocco label, a.e.g. (sl. rubbed, sm. def. to label). Nice copy.
Gallery of historical and mythological pictures (of e.g. Andromeda, Ariadne, Oedipus, as well as of Hannibal and Marcus Antonius), pairing illustrations with quotations from classical and modern Latin authors and the interpretations of these texts by the Dutch physician L. Smids (1649-1720). The engraver Adriaan Schoonebeek (1660-1714), a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe became the art instructor of Peter the Great. Engr. front., title ill., dedication (with bust and arms of N. Witsen) and 60 full-page pl. by Schoonebeek. They were afterwards used in “Histoire mythologique des dieux” (1715).
