Lot description
Ink and colour on paper, 8 joined sheets, 67,6 x 195,0 cm (folded: 22,8 x 16,0 cm) (some tears at folds).
In blind-stamped green cardboard wrappers with title slip (damaged). Good condition and colours.
This map shows a magnificent topographical view of the new town Yokohama just a year after the opening. Assembled from 8 oversized, sheets of paper, it is one of the largest prints ever published in the traditional Japanese technique of woodblock printing. With an inscription signed with the "nom de plume" Setsuryû Sanjin. Gyokuransai Hashimoto of Edo signed with his artist's name, Sadahide. In the minutely detailed landscape map Sadahide combines techniques of observation and artistic visualisation.
