18th-c. mottled calf, gilt spine with raised bands (corners bumped, some scratches, front joint split, head & tail sl. def.). Very good copy.
Second enl. edition (1st 1655) of the collected works of the Dutch statesman and poet Jacob Cats (1577-1660). Engr. ill.: front. with author's portrait, part titles or titles with ill. after A. Van de Venne, 2 other front. ("Aspasia" and "Buytenleven op Zorgvliet"), 2 full-page pl. (i.a. with a portrait of Cats), 3 double-page pl. ("Afbeeldinghe des huwelyk onder de gedaente van een fuyk", "Dodelycke uytgang van syn hoogheyt Fred. Henrik Prince van Oranje etc. Anno 1647" and "Sic transit gloria mundi"), and some 400 ill. or emblems (some with author's portraits). Contains i.a. "Proteus ofte Minne-beelden verandert in sinne-beelden" (1658), "Emblemata moralia et oeconomica", "Self-stryt" (1657), "Houwelyck" (1657), etc. Ms. signed by Schipper at the beginning of "Buytenleven op Zorgvliet". Cancellans at pp. 57 & 147 of Houwelyck.
