Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [22]-256-[8 (of 12)], [27-1 bl.]-420-[16] pp. (2 index ff. a4-5 missing in part 1; staining esp. at the beginning, minor spotting, sm. hole in text ff. V1 (vol. I) & 2D6 (vol. II), flyleaves gone).

Contemp. Flemish blind-ruled calf, spine with raised bands, 2 metal clasps & catches (rubbed, some sm. def.; expertly repaired at spine (rebacked with orig. spine conserved), corners and side). Good copy.

Rare first edition of the major work of the Recollect commissary general and writer P. Marchant (Couvin 1585-1661 Ghent), a full exposition of moral theology for the use of confessors, dedicated to the Ghent bishop Antonius Triest. Ill. with engr. title (with date 1643). Facing p. 1 of the 2nd part, a long ms. recipe written by a priest "Remède souverain et eprouvé et aussi approuvé pour la dissenterie", "ab oibus doctoribus lovaniensibus approbatum anno 1530". Title in red and black. One of the only 3 works printed by Bartholomeus Pauwels (STCV; 2 according to Bibl. gant.).
