Contemp. calf, gilt coat of arms on the double gilt-ruled boards, gilt spine with raised bands, spr. edges (sl rubbed, heads and tails sl. def.).
Fifth ed. (1st in 1705) of this collected work by Saint-Évremond containing his writings, comedy scripts and correspondence with i.a. Madame de Beverweert, Madame la Duchesse Mazarin, Mr. le Comte de Saint-Albans, Mr. le Duc de Buckingham, etc. Ill. with 4 engr. pl. out of text, 4 engr. front. and various pl. in-text. Charles de Marguetel de Saint-Denis, Lord of Saint-Évremond (1613-1703), was a French soldier, hedonist, essayist and literary critic. After 1661, he lived in exile, mainly in England, as a consequence of his attack on French policy at the time of the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659). Pierre Des Maizeaux (1666-1745) was a French Huguenot writer living in London.
