Live auction - Lot 1015

Old Mechelen, in a unique collection of drawings, made before the demolition works of the 19th century. Drawn to life or based on old prints, paintings or drawings by Auguste van den Eynde (1822-1861) or his father Arnold-Frans van den Eynde (1793-1885), also "peintre-amateur de Malines". Father Arnold-Frans was a keen collector of drawings, coins, charters, manuscripts and other records relating to Mechelen, a contemporary of the better-known Jean-Baptiste de Noter (1786-1855), and likewise a student of the local art academy. The importance of these three 19th-c. artists lies in their historical cityscapes; they drew from sources that are not infrequently lost, while at the same time being the last eyewitnesses of the city before the great urban changes. Ref. Kocken, M. - Mechelen volgens Van den Eynde. (Mechelen, J. Stevens, 1982).
