Lot description

Drawing, watercolour, 16,7 x 16,5 cm, paper, signed at bottom right: "Elchanon Verveer" (light dampstaining).

Under passe-partout.

Lovely scene with three children playing at the riverside. Elchanon Verveer (1826-1900) was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and was taught by his elder brother and the Dutch landscape painter Herman ten Kate (1822-1891). He painted idyllic romantic landscapes and also recorded the life of fishermen in Scheveningen. In 2015 a large exhibition was held of his work and that of his brother in the Jewish Museum of Amsterdam.
Joined: 1. De Keyser, Nicaise - Young lady at a water fountain. Antwerp, 1849. Watercolour on paper, 20,5 x 19 cm, ink signed and dated at bottom right: "De Keyser 1849". Under passe-partout. Historicising small painting, set in a medieval town square. On the verso a study for the same painting. - 2. Anonymous - Young girl and a dog. Ca. 1850. Watercolour on paper, 18 x 13,7 cm.
