Lot description

Folio: [12 incl. engr. title]-315-[12] pp.; 98 (of 100) pl. (missing pl.: 61. Middelburg Stadhuis, 96. Charlemont, text part browned, pl. only a bit toned, margins cut of pl. 81 Saint-Omer).

Contemp. vellum covers (sm. tr. of use).

1st Latin Blaeu edition (1st Italian: 1567), offering the reader an eloquent description of the 16th-c. towns in the Low Countries. Reinier Telle (1558-1619) translated and updated the text of the Italian 1588 Plantin edition. This edition has, for the first time, a description on Gouda included. With the engr. title and 98 engr. reprinted from Blaeu's Dutch 1612 edition. All plates mentioned in the "Index" are present, except for the pl. of Middelburg Stadhuis (Guicc. Ill. 61) and Charlemont (Guicc. Ill. 96). Also incl. are the plans of Rheinberg (Guicc. Ill. 25) and Amsterdam Beurs (Guicc. Ill. 43) by J.C. Visscher (1612) which are rarely present. Supplementary to the index is the rare view of Dunkerque-2 (Guicc. Ill. 73). Interesting copy because of the rare plates present.
Ref. Guicciardini illustratus 12.
Prov. Libr. stamp.
Joined: 7 sm. Guicciardini maps, incl. the missing Charlemont and Beaumont, Chimay, Landrecies, Mariembourg, Philippeville, Walcourt.
