Early 19th-c. red morocco signed Brochard, gilt title on flat spine, rich gilt inner dentelles, marbled flyleaves, a.e.g.
First Dutch translation of "L'Avare ou L'école du mensonge" (The Miser, first played in 1668), by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, "Molière" (1622-1673). Engr. title-p. with allegorical vignette "Yver in liefd bloeyende" with a bee hive and the Amsterdam coat of arms. The translator, the Dutch poet, playwright, and director of the Amsterdam Schouwburg (Municipal Theatre), Joan Pluimer (ca. 1647-1719) invented new Dutch names for most, but not all characters.
